My First Muay Thai Gloves: What I Wish I Had Known

· 5 min read

I trained in the gym's loaner gloves for close to a month before buying my own, mostly because I wasn't sure yet whether I'd stick with it. That turned out to be a reasonable way to decide — I wouldn't recommend spending on gear before you're sure the habit is going to hold.

I ended up with a pair of Twins Special 14oz gloves, ordered directly from their official store. 14oz felt like the obvious beginner choice once a coach explained it: enough padding to protect my hands and my partners' faces while I was still learning control on the pads.

What nobody told me: new leather gloves need a genuine break-in period, and mine felt stiff and slightly too padded for the first couple of weeks. I also underestimated how much hand-wrap technique affects fit — a sloppy wrap job made an otherwise well-fitted glove feel wrong.

If I were choosing again, I'd size based on what I'd actually use them for rather than what looked most common in class — I do more pad work than sparring, and a slightly lighter glove might have suited that better.
