How I Built a Consistent Training Routine

· 7 min read

My routine now is simple: Tuesday and Thursday evenings, a longer Saturday session, and an extra open mat when the week allows. It didn't start out that consistent — the first couple of months were closer to 'whenever I felt like it,' which in practice meant once a week if I was lucky.

What changed it was treating the class times like fixed appointments rather than optional plans, the same way I would a meeting I couldn't easily move. Once training stopped being a decision I made fresh each day, showing up got much easier.

Something had to give to make room for it. A standing dinner became an occasional one. A couple of evenings that used to disappear into nothing in particular now have a clear shape to them.

January was the real test. Motivation dropped off completely for about two weeks, and the only thing that got me back was that the sessions were already on the calendar — I didn't have to decide to go, just show up to something I'd already committed to.
